Look Pivot Ski Binding

Tools: SolidWorks · Calipers · McMaster-Carr CAD · Engineering drawings
Timeline: March 2026 – May 2026

Overview
As a skier, I’ve always been curious how bindings work, since they’re one of the most precise pieces of gear on the mountain. I reverse engineered a Look Pivot binding to understand how a real mass-produced product is designed and put together.

What I did
I took apart the binding and measured all 24 components with calipers, then modeled each part in SolidWorks, including some fairly complex curved geometry. I brought in McMaster-Carr hardware models for the off the shelf fasteners and assembled everything into a full binding assembly. To finish, I made a complete set of dimensioned engineering drawings.

Result
A complete, accurate 3D model of the binding with a full assembly and drawing package.

What I learned
Rebuilding someone else’s design part by part showed me how much thought goes into every shape, tolerance, and fastener. Nothing on a binding is random, and figuring out the reason behind each feature was the best part of the project.
